Overview

A study in civilizational form and architectural restraint. The RuYi Top Handle translates ancient Chinese philosophy into a modern, three-dimensional silhouette. Sourced from the formal geometry of the historical 如意 scepter, an ancestral object associated with self-possession, harmony, and the right to define oneself by one's own measure ("as one wishes"), this piece honours the dignity of what a woman carries privately.

Stripped of prominent external logos, its identity relies entirely on the structural integrity of its silhouette and the discernment of the woman holding it.

The Interior Inscription Plate

Inside every RuYi Top Handle sits a blank metal plate, concealed from the room and visible only to you. Every plate is inscribed by hand by a woman-owned small business right here in Vancouver. It serves as a psychological anchor, a private canvas for a name, a date, or a phrase that only you understand. You are invited to write your own story into the record on your own terms.

Heritage & Cultural Stewardship

Form Follows Intention (形隨意轉 器載千年): In classical Chinese material culture, the form of an object was inseparable from its moral and philosophical intention. The art of relief hand-carving and tooling originated as an intricate, noble craftsmanship reserved for objects of imperial prestige. Rather than applying surface decoration or motifs to a standard bag, the curve of the RuYi flap is a structural translation of a ceremonial tradition spanning over a thousand years. Every pattern requires days of rigorous drafting and precise tooling to achieve its load-bearing depth.

Structural Commitment

Five percent (5%) of every XU bag goes directly to Battered Women’s Support Services (BWSS) in Vancouver. This structural commitment is built directly into the cost configuration of XU Atelier, not a discretionary marketing footnote, ensuring that the values embedded in our design language are mirrored by the actions that sustain the brand.

The Architecture & Materials

 • The RuYi Cloud Flap: The distinctive curved architecture of the flap is derived directly from the formal geometry of the RuYi scepter’s auspicious cloud form. This structural reference is built into the load-bearing shape of the leather itself, rather than being applied to the surface as decoration, creating a silhouette that feels emotionally distinctive and culturally grounded without appearing costume-like
 • The Body: Crafted from premium full-grain Italian leather. Left completely unadulterated by heavy synthetic finishing, the natural top-layer texture remains intact, allowing the hide to develop a completely unique, personal patina over a lifetime of wear.
 • The Lining: The interior features a blend of natural cotton-linen and structured tonal leather panels.
 • The Hardware: Solid brass hardware featuring a custom turnlock. The raw brass finish ages truthfully and warms over years of handling.
 • Proportions: Medially proportioned to balance its symbolic sculptural weight with genuine daily functionality. Sized intentionally for work, travel, and ordinary movement through a demanding day.
